Ten Tips To Help You Choose An Electrician Ask your friends and neighbors for a recommendation. Word of mouth is often the best way to make sure you get the job done well. If you can't get a recommendation, use the Internet or local press or business directory to find a local electrician for small jobs. Phone three or four electricians or electrical contractors to get full quotes so that you know what the total cost should be before the work begins. For example, is there a call-out charge or an hourly rate? Are all materials included in the quote? Don't go on price alone. Ask whether the electrician or electrical contractor guarantees their work and corrects any work that does not meet applicable standards. Look for an electrician who is a specialist in the type of electrical work you need--security or communications. Find out whether your local electrician is independent or works as a local agent of a national company or contractor. The latter can sometimes be more expensive than independent electricians but you have the added confidence that comes from knowing that the parent company has vetted the electrician and is happy to allow him or her to work under their name. Check that the electrician holds a valid license for the jurisdiction in which the work will be carried out, and that he or she is registered. Check that your electrician has public liability insurance in case of an accident while working on your electrical jobs. Ask for references. This doesn't have to rule out electricians who are new to the profession. An electrician can be competent without having much experience--a newly qualified electrician should be able to provide references from his or her training provider. Check with the Better Business Bureau to find out whether there are any complaints or negative comments against the electrician or contractor. Listen to what your instincts are telling you. If you don't know much about electrics, you have to trust that your electrical contractor or electrician knows what he or she is doing and isn't overstating the extent of the work required in order to overcharge. If you don't feel confident, go with someone else. commercial electrical wiring

Home Maintenance Checklist

Many consumers are unaware of the ways that technological advances benefit them, especially in the industrial surge protection field.  Most people think of surge protection as the surge strips that you can buy at Walmart and plug your computer into.  Due to the fact that it is a rare occasion that a power surge will affect your home in a way that affects your electronic equipment, many begin to believe over time that surge protection is actually pointless and unnecessary.  In reality, the surge strips that will pop and cut off the power to your computer in the event of a power surge are only a very small aspect of the surge protection industry, one that saves consumers thousands of dollars each year in the bills they pay for utilities as well as in the prices they pay for services.  This is due to the fact that the typical industrial application involves a significant expectation of replacement costs of equipment that will be damaged by electrical surges, costs which must be passed off to the consumer in order to remain profitable.  As the levels of damage that are predicted to happen on a year to year basis is reduced and the costs of operation are brought down, the savings can be passed off to consumers in the form of lower prices. Most consumers are unaware that one of the biggest costs associated with many industries is surge related damage as a result of lightning strikes.  Essentially, the concept is based on the fact that lightning strikes cause significant power surges that damage the equipment that runs industrial installations of all kinds.  These lightning strikes cannot be predicted or mitigated, but the surges that are produced as a result of them can be stopped from causing damage if industrial level surge protection devices are installed and appropriate measures are taken.  This extends the useful life of the equipment that is typically figured into the business plan as needing to be replaced at periodic intervals as a result of damage.  The technological advances of surge protection equipment allow companies to get more useful life from their equipment, and therefore absorb less yearly costs that must be passed off as pricing increases.  The most advanced of these surge protection devices also provides an ability to not be knocked offline after performing its duties, as a residential surge strip would be.  By not needing resetting or replacement after use, industrial installations are able to keep online for longer periods of time and therefore creating surpluses of their product, again driving down prices to consumers. While your typical consumer may know very little about the industrial surge protection market and the role it plays in their lives, they benefit from the technological advances that are made each year that improve the products.  New industries like green energy and high-speed data transfer companies as well as cellular companies all utilize cutting edge surge protection devices in order to maximize performance and minimize costs.  This is all beneficial to the consumer who sees lower prices and better services as a result.  This beneftis to consumers end up saving millions of dollars each year that can be spent in other ways and supporting other industries which also may be utilizing surge protection to their benefit.  The bottom line is that by reducing the natural occurrence of damage that is a result of lightning strikes and surge-related replacement and resetting, consumers benefit.  The surge protection industry is continually developing improved products which will create greater and greater savings for consumers across the globe.  We should all be thankful.

3 Ways to Save Money on Your Electric Bill

Your home needs juice, and a generator is there to either provide full power or auxiliary power when your city's electric network goes down. Keeping that in mind, there is a wide variety of generators available, depending on your home's needs. What you want to do is install a high-quality generator which can cover your entire home. This means that, the more juice your home consumes, the more powerful your generator needs to be. You also need to take good care of price-per-quality ratio, because not all generators on the market will provide you for the equal amount of time, or equally reliable. In order to suit the load under which the generator will work, you need to have an optimal rate of frequency, power and voltage. On top of that, it is important that you let an expert do this. Not only do you need to acquire it from an authorized generator dealer, you need to hire a qualified electrician to do the hard work as well. They will also know more about the information mentioned above. The dealer will be able to deliver your product to your home, as well as provide useful information on an optimal placement location. While the latter can also be done by a qualified electrician, you also need one to install it into that location properly, as well as recommend (or even provide) a decent fuel source and appliances. An auxiliary generator will also require a transfer switch. When choosing a generator, it is important to know whether you need a stand-alone generator or an auxiliary power source. A stand-alone generator, also known as a home energy station by some manufacturers, will provide your home with electricity independently of your local power plant. On the other hand, an auxiliary generator, also known as a standby or backup generator by some manufacturers, will provide your home with power during an outage. Your electrician will also need to connect the generator to a fuel source, be it gas (plumber, propane, etc.) or otherwise -you need to check with your local gas company. To conclude, in order to install a generator to your home, you need to take care of its quality, the load it can take, the purpose you need it for, and most importantly, your own safety.

5 Ways to Prevent shocks and other electrical injuries

Why Replace the Electrical Panel? It may be necessary to upgrade or replace an Electrical Panel to expand capacity, satisfy building codes, gain efficacy, or a combination of any of these. A typical reason for Upgrading an Electrical Panel is for availability to add circuits. Many older Electrical Panels won't accommodate adding circuits, appliances, outlets, hot tubs, and commonly require increased capacity. In adding these items throughout the building, it sometimes becomes necessary to improve the panel, the wiring, and circuit breakers. However, this is not always the case. It is important to get a professional and ethical electrician to help you. Breakers can often be installed without panel upgrades, get an honest electrician. The Electrical Service Panel was designed to serve the needs of the building at the time it was constructed and to provide for a minimal amount of growth. To illustrate this, imagine a home built in 1964. It would have enough capacity to operate only a handful of outlets, lights, and a few appliances. Through time, modern electrical conveniences have evolved. That same house gets a television and microwave in the 1970′s. In the 1980′s automatic dishwashers, air conditioners, and ceiling fans are added. The 1990′s we got phone chargers, VCR’s, and by 2010+ we have iPhones, laptops, and more consuming electricity. home electrician

Electric Baseboard Heaters Electrician

Industrial Surge Protection Saves Customers Money

There are various options available by which one can save money, however, the budget is the deciding factor in choosing the type of lighting one can avail. Moreover, it is necessary to consult a professional electrician who can cater and provide various options which are feasible and can help to save money in the long run. An average household spends about 5% of its energy budget to lighting. Switching to energy-efficient lighting is one of the easiest ways to cut the energy bills. New light bulbs: what’s the difference? Traditional incandescent bulbs use a lot of energy to produce light and over 90% of the energy is wasted as heat. Whereas, the energy-efficient light bulbs use about 20%-80% less energy than the traditional incandescent, saving a lot of money. What are the different lighting choices available? There are many energy-saving light bulbs available, such as compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), light emitting diodes (LEDs), etc. Although they cost more than the traditional incandescent bulbs, however, save a lot of money because they use less energy. One can easily find these in almost every hardware and home improvement store and can be fixed by taking help of a professional electrician. CFL vs LED light bulbs: which is better? Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) are a version of the long tube fluorescent lights. They use less electricity than the traditional light bulbs. Moreover, an ENERGY STAR-rated  CFL uses about one-fourth of the energy and lasts longer than a traditional incandescent that puts out the same amount of light. It contains mercury, which is a toxic heavy metal, which is harmful to both health and the environment. The light-emitting diodes (LEDs) light up immediately, like an incandescent bulb and is a source of light that is reliable, instantaneous, and can be dimmed accordingly. They last up to five times longer than the CFLs, which can literally last a lifetime. Moreover, these are user-friendly as they do not contain mercury and are available in soft, warm, and bright white hues. LEDs work well both indoors and outdoors because of their durability in the cold environment and they are safer, studier and easy to install. Comparing cost While replacing the light bulbs, the budget is an important factor in deciding which lighting option to choose. It is necessary to buy good quality bulbs that last longer rather than buying a dozen or cheaper ones that keep burning out. Although, both CFLs and LEDs use considerably less electricity than the traditional bulbs. However, long-lasting and more efficient light bulbs pay off over time. CFLs are comparatively cheaper than the LEDs, therefore, one can choose according to the set budget.   Other Important factors It is recommended to get a professional home energy audit with the help of a professional electrician. This helps one to pinpoint areas where the home is losing energy and what all improvements are required to save money in the long run. The professional recommends making upgrades in a home energy audit, which can save up to 10%-30% of the annual utility bill. Moreover, it is necessary to properly maintain the heating and cooling equipment; turning off lights when not in use; reducing electricity use throughout the home; reducing the use of hot water; ensuring if the home is adequately insulated; and smart use of home design elements, such as landscaping and window coverings can save more money in the long run. Also, one can choose the lighting products which are energy star rated, as it exceeds the federal minimum standards for efficiency, to save money.  electrical repair

Interesting Facts about Electrical Power

According to a study done by the Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2,287 U.S. workers died and 32,807 sustained lost-time injuries from electrical shock or burn injuries between 1992 and 1999. Of these 32,807 non-fatal injuries involving lost time, 38 percent were classified as electrical burns. Each injury caused an average of 13 days away from work, and nearly one fatality occurred every day of the year. While this study is several years old, it's still relevant today because we continue to face the same issues with electrical shock and burn injuries. Here are two regulatory updates issued in response to this problem, with guidance on providing a safe workplace: OSHA Electrical Standard Update, Subpart S of 29 CFR Part 1910 OSHA, in the proposed rule, explains the reason for the update. OSHA undertook the project to revise 29 CFR Part 1910, Subpart S, for two major reasons. First, OSHA wanted the standard to reflect the most current practice and technology in the industry. Second, in implementing the rule, OSHA responded to requests from stakeholders to revise Subpart S so it reflects more recent editions of NFPA 70, the National Electrical Code, and NFPA 70E, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace. According to OSHA's press release of Feb 13, 2007, "The changes to OSHA's general-industry electrical-installation standard focus on safety in designing and installing electrical equipment in the workplace. Included in the new standard are a new alternative method for classifying and installing equipment in Class I hazardous locations and new requirements for ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs). The 2000 edition of the NFPA 70E was used as a foundation for the revised standard. The final rule also replaces the reference to the 1971 National Electrical Code in the mandatory appendix to the powered-platform standard with a reference to OSHA's new electrical-installation standard." The final rule becomes effective Aug. 13, 2007. To read OSHA's "Safety and Health Topics" for electrical, visit http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/electrical/ index.html. Navy Electrical Update Navy photo by MC3 Marvin E. Thompson, Jr. The Navy is ahead of OSHA in updating electrical-safety standards. The Navy updated the Tri-Services Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) 3-560-01, with Change 1, "Electrical Safety, Operations and Maintenance (O&M)," to meet the requirements of NFPA 70E 2004. This UFC supersedes UFC-3-560-10N (previously MIL-HDBK-1025/10), Safety of Electrical Transmission and Distribution Systems, referenced in OpNavInst 5100.23G. It incorporates tri-service requirements into one unified document and provides electrical-safety requirements for all shore electrical-work activities (low and high voltage) and addresses implementing NFPA 70E 2004 arc-flash criteria for electrical safety. An updated version of OpNav P-45-117-6-98, Electrical Worker Field Safety Guide, incorporating the requirements of this UFC, is being developed and should be available in the near future. Remember, regulations always are the minimum requirements to ensure worker safety. OSHA's 29 CFR 1910, Subpart S, and the Tri-Service UFC provide guidance to help ensure your command's electrical workers have a safe workplace. You always can take more steps to further protect yourself and your fellow workers. From power plant to your home; the journey of energy It was Thomas Alva Edison who completely revolutionized the way people perceive and use energy. But it was quite long ago; that was a time when energy was produced where and when it was required. But with a power station, one has the freedom to choose the place of production and place of consumption. However, the connecting link or go-between has to be electricity. Thus, one can generate electricity in Rajasthan and that electricity can be used in places like Bihar. A power station, also commonly known as powerhouse, power plant, or an industrial facility for generating electric power is known to contain generators or rotating machines which can easily and effortlessly convert mechanical power to electrical power. Important facts about power stations Before one delve into the various types of power stations, or know about different electrical power projects, you must known that at the centre of a power station is the AC generator or the alternator which is nothing but a rotating machine. This rotating machine creates relative motion between the magnetic field and the conductors. The source of energy is harnessed to turn the generator shafts can vary and is mainly dependent on the kind of fuel that is used. Different kinds of power stations In all the electrical power projects, when there is a question of bulk power generation, only hydro, nuclear and thermal power is used. A thermal power station or a coal-fired thermal power plant is probably one of the most convenient methods of generating electric power with much greater efficiency. Coal is used as the primary fuel to boil the water to create superheated steam to run the turbine. The main functionality of nuclear power plants is almost similar to thermal power stations. However, in case of a nuclear plant, radioactive elements such as thorium and uranium are used as the primary fuel. For nuclear power generation, the radioactive fuels go through a process known as fission reaction within the reactors. In case of a hydro-electric plant, it is the energy of the falling water which is harnessed to run the turbine, which in turn helps to run the generator to produce electricity. Developers who are involved in electric power projects Apart from the public sector companies, there are quite a few private sector companies which are involved in electrical power projects. Their main aim is to provide sufficient, budget-friendly and superior-quality power to the masses. The techniques are extremely cutting-edge and the technology boasts of innovation. But at the same time, they are searching for sustainable solutions, which mean that they do not mean any harm to the environment because of their projects. In most cases, leading developers have high voltage transmission lines and various substations which increase the transformation capacities; the transformation from mechanical to electrical energy is now a matter of few hours. There are taking help of foreign technologies and the most advanced science to create a sustainable situation, where transformation and transmission of energy will no longer be a hard task. Companies, for instance understands that a country like India has an extremely patchy distribution of natural resources; hence the need of transmission corridors is on the rise. The transmission corridors developed by many power companies connect the major regions of power generation with load centres. And then the power is taken to utilities which will transmit the energy to factories, schools and other places. The future of power generation Apart from advanced technology, one can find the latest innovations like the use of heavy lift helicopter and aircranes to set up power transmission lines in remote areas. The use of LIDAR or Light Detection and Ranging technique is being used to measure the laser distances as well. It is not just the land that is being used for the transmission of energy; the lines are also being run through rivers and streams. The future of power knows no limitations at all!   24 hour emergency electrician

Industrial Surge Protection Saves Customers Money

Who would have thought getting a tree removed could be such a headache! I hear this time and time again from homeowners all across the country, who are trying to get their trees lopped or removed by a professional at a reasonable price. So what’s so hard? Most go straight for the local paper, find a couple of tree contractors promoting their service and away they go. That'll be fine, Right? Well not so fast. You see, there are tree loppers and there are arborists. The difference is massive and could potentially save you thousands in property damage and or personal injury.... Let me explain.                   The Industry The tree lopping industry is one of Australia's top 10 most dangerous industry (it actually comes in at #5 just after construction), but if you look at it from deaths per 1000 workers, it's actually the most deadly industry in Australia. The scary part is, you don't need a licence to operate as an arborist! It's a completely unregulated industry. If you were to hire an electrician or a plumber to do some handy work at your house, they would need to be licensed to do so. They would need to have been through the proper training and license numbers are issued to qualified individuals who have completed the training. The industry is also monitored closely as to not allow 'shonky' tradesmen operate. Being such a niche market, the money you can earn pruning or removing dangerous suburban trees is comparable to what a doctor or lawyer might earn… They don’t call them tree doctors for nothing! But seriously, for a large tree to be removed you are looking at $2000 - $4000 depending on the size and location of the tree. With the right equipment, a good crew can be finished with 1 large job by 11 AM and onto the next after lunch. This results in a large number of what the industry professionals call "cowboys" who don't know what they are doing and take unnecessary risks through ignorance, lack of experience or just plain stupidity. This results in a high number of personal injury and property damage cases being reported on a weekly basis. And if you hired one of these unqualified cowboys and damage was done to your property... you'd be left to clean up the mess and pay for potentially tens of thousands of dollars in repairs. How to avoid 'shonky' contractors?  You make sure that every Tree Lopper that quotes your job has these 3 things: 1. A certificate II (minimum) in Arboriculture 2. 5 million in public liability insurance3. 5 years experience (minimum) As the community is waking up to the dangers to hiring an unqualified arborist, more and more homeowners are beginning to ask for the above as a minimum requirement during the quoting process. And the true arborists are happy to comply. In fact must are starting to hand over proof of qualification and insurance with every quote they do. What else to look for Now that you have ascertained that your arborist is actually an arborist and is capable of doing the work, there are a few more little things you can look for to be sure he or she is a great arborist. Informative assessment - Arborists love sharing their knowledge, so when you present your tree they should be able to tell you what species it is (both common name and Latin name) and also some details about why it's sick or how they are going to trim/ remove and why etc.  Communication - There is nothing more frustrating when you are trying to contact a contractor and they won’t answer their phone. Or when they do and you make arrangements to meet, they are late or worse yet, they don't turn up at all. If you’re not worth their time or their courtesy, then more on. Now with the power of the knowledge above you are in a great position to select a fantastic tree contractor for your job with minimum risk of property damage and maximum chances it will be a good experience.     commercial electrical contractors

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE).

How to Choose the Best Electrician for your needs

Having the lighting system within your home changed to high efficiency lighting will ensure that, your not left in the dark, as manufacturers stop producing incandescent bulb replacements. With the many advances that have been made within the lighting industry, homeowners across the nation have multiple available choices. Choosing the one that's right for you and your family, is as simple as determining your personal lighting needs. Compact fluorescent Lighting Having compact fluorescent lighting throughout the home has a multitude of benefits including, energy efficiency, waste reduction and budget friendly advantages. Compact fluorescent lightly allows homeowners to light their home, without using an excess in energy. In fact, on average they'll be using 75% less energy than they would with incandescent bulbs. Due to the known longer lifespan of compact fluorescent bulbs, the need for replacement is less, thereby reducing waste. This adds a great environmental advantage, it ensures that less waste is filling up landfills. Additionally, through a reduction in the need to replace bulbs, less money is spent on buying bulbs, thereby creating a monetary benefit to monthly and yearly budgets. fluorescent Lighting Typical fluorescent lighting is hard wired through the ceiling and requires an electronic ballast. This type of lighting allows homeowners to light up entire rooms with the use of a single lighting fixture. It provides energy efficiency, thereby reducing environmental waste and annual energy cost. Having fluorescent lighting installed, is as simple as having a specialist from your local Milton Electric Company come out to your home and discuss your individual install options. LED Lighting high-efficiency-lightning-2An often preferred lighting solution is to have LED lighting systems installed. They allow customization on a per room bases. Ranging from 3mm to 8mm, each room can be fitted with the exact amount of lighting needed. Though they are small in size, their output is superior to other lighting options. Having an LED lighting system installed is a relatively fast experience. Typical installations can be done within the same day, thereby providing you with the lighting you want, without the headache of a drawn out remodeling project. Having an electrical technician evaluate your home and your lighting needs, will ensure that the LED system that's perfect for your home can be efficiently installed. Available Lighting Options There are several options available when choosing between compact fluorescent, fluorescent and LED lighting. On the simplistic side, choices in bulbs can be changed to compact fluorescent light bulbs. However, for more advanced options, such as ballast fluorescent lighting and LED lighting, a professional should be contacted to ensure proper installation. This can be a simple as a single ballast install or as intricate as having track lighting installed or LED strip lighting placed along the ceiling or walls. Regardless of the lighting system chosen, compact fluorescent, fluorescent and LED light systems are highly more efficient than yesterdays incandescent bulbs.

Electrical, Gas and Refrigeration appliance servicing and maintenance

We should all be thankful. electrical service panel

How to Choose the Best Electrician for your needs

24 hour electrician
